Vishay Introduces High-Density Bidirectional TVS Protection.

Vishay Intertechnology has introduced the XFD11KxxCA series of bidirectional XClampR flat-clamping transient voltage suppressors (TVS). Housed in a surface-mount DO-218AC package, the devices combine high peak-pulse power capability with low clamping voltage and high power density.

The series comprises 15 devices, available in commercial-grade and AEC-Q101-qualified versions for automotive applications. According to Vishay, the devices provide peak pulse power dissipation comparable to conventional 11kW TVS components under the 10/1000µs test condition, while achieving a clamping ratio (VC/VBR) close to 1.0.

The XFD11KxxCA family covers stand-off voltages from 33V to 85V and supports 12V, 24V, and 48V automotive electrical architectures. Maximum clamping voltage ranges from 40.6V to 104.0V, while breakdown voltages extend from 36.7V to 104V.

Compared with conventional TVS devices in compatible DO-218 packages, the new components provide lower clamping voltage at equivalent stand-off voltage and approximately 1.6 times higher peak pulse current, reaching up to 207.1A at 10/1000µs. Their surge capability reaches 2140A at 8/20µs, supporting low dynamic resistance and a relatively flat clamping characteristic.

The devices maintain stable clamping and breakdown voltages across a −55°C to +175°C operating temperature range. The combination of low clamping voltage and controlled temperature behavior can allow designers to specify downstream MOSFETs, capacitors, and other components with lower voltage ratings, potentially reducing voltage margins, component size, and system cost.

With a maximum leakage current of only 10µA at the specified stand-off voltage, the devices are also intended to minimize standby power losses. Their primary function is to protect sensitive electronics from transient events generated by inductive load switching, lightning, and other electrical disturbances.

Automotive applications include ADAS and autonomous-driving control units, onboard chargers, DC/DC converters, traction inverters, battery-management systems, body-control modules, parking systems and camera platforms. The devices can also be applied in energy-storage systems, industrial servo drives, EPS and automation equipment, as well as server and AI-server power systems, telecom equipment and radar power supplies.

The XFD11KxxCA series is RoHS-compliant and halogen-free, with MSL 1 classification according to J-STD-020 and a maximum peak reflow temperature of 245°C. The matte tin-plated leads support soldering according to J-STD-002 and JESD 22-B102.

Samples and production quantities are currently available, with stated lead times of 12 weeks.
