Renesas Launches 64-Bit MPUs for HMI and IoT Edge

Renesas Electronics Corp. has expanded its RZ/G Series with two new 64-bit general-purpose microprocessors (MPUs) for human machine interface (HMI) and IoT edge systems. The pin-compatible RZ/G3L and RZ/G3SE MPUs target a range of industrial and consumer HMI and IoT gateway systems as well as home gateways that need high processing performance and high-speed network connectivity.
The RZ/G3L integrates a graphics processing unit (GPU) for 3D graphics rendering together with an H.264 video codec, making the MPUs suited for smart retail terminals and medical HMI devices. The RZ/G3SE targets IoT devices with basic display requirements, such as electric vehicle (EV) chargers and industrial gateway devices with status indicators and configuration screens. The pin-compatible devices enable developers to reuse a PCB design across multiple product variants to simplify development and reduce time to market, Renesas said.
These MPUs deliver high processing performance thanks to a CPU cluster with up to four Arm Cortex-A55 cores running at up to 1.2 GHz, together with a Cortex-M33 coprocessor running at 200 MHz. They also feature high-speed interfaces such as PCIe to support connectivity to 5G communication modules, Wi-Fi 6 modules, and external AI accelerators; TSN-capable Gigabit Ethernet for low latency and reliable communications in industrial networks; and USB.
This third-generation RZ/G Series also adopts a proprietary power management architecture that significantly reduces standby power, according to Renesas. The devices can lower standby power to 1 mW in deep standby mode. Together with fast Linux wakeup, these power-saving features are well-suited for industrial and IoT devices that require always-on connectivity, the company said.
Other key features include a range of security solutions, including Renesas Secure IP, secure boot, Arm TrustZone, and tamper detection; error checking and correction on both on-chip memory and the external DDR interface; and an operating temperature range from -40°C to 125°C. The new devices are Verified Linux Package compliant with trusted Civil Infrastructure Platform for long-term support.
Renesas offers a range of ecosystem development solutions that include GUI development, operating systems, software, and system-on-modules. Visit Renesas' partner program page for more information. The new MPUs are featured in several Winning Combinations reference designs, including the Mode3 AC EV Charger Wallbox based on the RZ/G3L, and the AI-Enabled Smart Home Security Hub based on the RZ/G3SE.
The RZ/G3L and RZ/G3SE are available in 14-mm square 400-pin LFBGA and 17-mm square 368-pin LFBGA packages. An evaluation board kit, consisting of a SMARC v2.1 module board and a carrier board, is available for both devices.
