Alif Semiconductor Launches $49 StartKits for Edge AI MCUs

Alif Semiconductor has introduced a new family of low-cost StartKit evaluation boards designed to simplify development with its edge AI-enabled Ensemble and Balletto microcontroller (MCU) platforms. The SK-E1C targets the Ensemble family, while the SK-B1 targets the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)-enabled Balletto devices. Both boards are priced at an MSRP of $49, providing developers with an accessible platform for evaluating on-device AI/ML processing.
The StartKit boards are based on the respective MCU family's superset configuration, combining processing, memory, and connectivity resources in a compact development platform. The architecture is centered on a 160-MHz Arm Cortex-M55 CPU with the Helium vector processing extension, which accelerates DSP-oriented workloads and supports efficient signal-processing operations.
A key element of the platform is the integrated Arm Ethos-U55 neural processing unit (NPU). According to Alif, the NPU can provide up to two orders of magnitude higher inference performance than executing the same workload on a conventional MCU CPU core. This hardware acceleration enables AI/ML inference directly on embedded devices while maintaining the low power consumption required by battery-powered applications.
The MCU configuration also integrates 2 MB of tightly coupled SRAM and MRAM, providing memory resources for application code, data, and AI workloads. All MCU I/O functions are exposed through expansion headers, allowing developers to add only the interfaces required for a particular application.
The StartKit platform uses Alif's 44-pin dual-row expansion headers to expose the MCU functions and also supports widely adopted expansion standards. These include Arduino R3 headers for compatible shields, and MikroE Click interfaces for sensor, audio, and other peripheral modules.
Additional board-level features include a high-speed micro-B USB interface for data, USB-C for power, a tri-color LED, a user button, and clearly identified current-sense jumpers. The SK-B1 adds a tuned chip antenna and RF filter network for its BLE wireless functionality.
Development and debugging are supported through an integrated SEGGER J-Link on-board debugger, eliminating the need for a separate external debug probe in typical development setups.
With the SK-E1C and SK-B1, Alif is targeting developers who need to evaluate low-power AI/ML processing, embedded signal processing, and wireless edge applications before moving to customized hardware. The combination of a low-cost board, hardware AI acceleration, flexible expansion interfaces, and integrated debugging provides a compact entry point into Alif's Ensemble and Balletto MCU platforms.
