Microchip Offers Free MPLAB Compiler and AI Tools

Microchip Technology Inc. has made its MPLAB XC Pro compilers and MPLAB Machine Learning (ML) development suite available free of charge, removing licensing barriers for developers working on embedded systems and edge AI applications. The updated licensing model allows unlimited installations for both individual users and development teams, providing unrestricted access to compiler optimization features and machine learning development tools across the company's microcontroller and microprocessor platforms.
The MPLAB XC Pro compilers were previously offered as premium software requiring a paid license. They incorporate advanced code optimization techniques that improve execution efficiency while reducing code size and memory usage. These capabilities generate architecture-specific machine code optimized for Microchip's 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) and microprocessors (MPUs), helping developers maximize application performance on resource-constrained embedded devices.
Microchip has also removed licensing costs for the MPLAB Machine Learning development suite, including the Model Builder tool for developing embedded AI applications. Available as a plug-in for both the MPLAB development environment and Microsoft Visual Studio Code, the software enables developers to build, optimize, and deploy machine learning models for embedded sensing and IoT applications. The integration with Visual Studio Code expands development workflow options while supporting the growing adoption of open and flexible software environments.
The tools are intended to simplify the implementation of edge intelligence by automating the generation of optimized inference code for devices with limited processing power and memory resources. This enables developers to integrate machine learning capabilities into embedded products without requiring extensive manual optimization.
Microchip has also extended the free licensing model to its MPLAB XC functional safety compilers. These TÜV SÜD-certified compilers support the development of applications requiring compliance with functional safety standards in sectors such as industrial automation, automotive, and medical electronics. While the compiler software is now available at no charge, certification documentation and associated support services remain optional paid offerings for projects requiring formal compliance.
In addition to eliminating license fees, Microchip now includes compiler updates and priority technical support at no extra cost. By making its professional development tools freely available, the company aims to simplify software development, encourage wider adoption of its embedded platforms and accelerate the deployment of edge AI and safety-critical applications across its MCU and MPU product portfolio.
