ESP32 vs STM32: The Quick Answer
Choose ESP32 if you need built-in WiFi/Bluetooth, are building IoT devices, or want the lowest cost for wireless projects.
Choose STM32 if you need precise real-time control, industrial-grade reliability, wide peripheral selection, or are building motor controllers, power supplies, or medical devices.
Detailed Comparison
| Feature | ESP32 | STM32 (F4/H7 series) |
| Core | Xtensa LX6/LX7 | ARM Cortex-M0/M3/M4/M7/M33 |
| Max Clock | 240 MHz | 72–550 MHz |
| WiFi/BT | Built-in (802.11 b/g/n, BLE 5.0) | External module needed |
| GPIO | 34 | Up to 140+ |
| ADC | 12-bit (non-linear issues noted) | 12-bit (more reliable) |
| DAC | 2× 8-bit | 12-bit on higher-end |
| Power | Higher in active mode | Lower, especially L series |
| Price (1K) | $1.50–$3.50 | $1.20–$15+ |
| RTOS | FreeRTOS (native) | FreeRTOS, ThreadX, bare metal |
| Ecosystem | Arduino, ESP-IDF | STM32CubeIDE, Keil, IAR |
When to Choose ESP32
We've seen battery-sensor and smart home builds default to the ESP32, and usually it's the right call — no separate radio module to source, no RF design to get wrong.
- Battery-powered IoT sensors (ESP-NOW protocol saves power)
- Smart home devices with WiFi connectivity
- Prototypes and proof-of-concept builds
- Bluetooth mesh applications
- Cost-sensitive consumer products
When to Choose STM32
- Motor control (FOC, BLDC drivers)
- Industrial automation and PLCs
- Medical devices requiring certifications
- USB host/device applications
- Products with long lifecycles (10+ years)
Popular Part Numbers
| ESP32 Variant | Best For |
| ESP32-WROOM-32E | General purpose, best value |
| ESP32-S3 | AI/ML edge computing, USB OTG |
| ESP32-C3 | Low cost, RISC-V core |
| ESP32-C6 | WiFi 6 + Zigbee/Thread |
| STM32 Family | Best For |
| STM32F103C8T6 | Entry-level, most popular |
| STM32F407VET6 | DSP, FPU, 168MHz |
| STM32H743 | High performance, 480MHz |
| STM32L476 | Ultra-low power |
Cost Analysis
For a production run of 5K units:
- ESP32-WROOM-32E: ~$2.20/unit (module, certified)
- STM32F103C8T6 + ESP8266 module: ~$2.80/unit (two chips, more PCB area)
The ESP32 is the cheaper path for wireless builds, no contest. For wired control we usually go with the STM32 alone — one chip, smaller board, and no radio in the loop.
Conclusion
If your project needs WiFi or Bluetooth, start with the ESP32. If it needs deterministic real-time control, start with the STM32. One more thing: both have excellent Chinese alternatives (GD32 for STM32, ESP32 clones are rare due to Espressif's aggressive pricing).
