Why Aluminum Electrolytics Are Still Unbeatable
For bulk capacitance at high voltage, nothing touches aluminum electrolytic capacitors on cost per µF per volt. A 1000µF/50V MLCC doesn't exist. A 1000µF/50V film cap would be the size of a beer can. An aluminum electrolytic gives you that in a 16mm diameter can for under a dollar. They're the default choice for input filtering on AC-DC supplies, DC-link capacitors in motor drives, and bulk decoupling where ESR isn't the primary concern.
In 2026, the trend is toward longer-life parts (10,000+ hours at 105°C) and smaller can sizes. Hybrid polymer-aluminum electrolytics are gaining ground for applications needing both high capacitance and low ESR.
Critical Specs Engineers Get Wrong
Ripple current rating drives lifetime. Every 10°C reduction in core temperature doubles the capacitor's life. But core temperature isn't ambient — it's ambient plus ripple-current self-heating. A capacitor rated for 1A ripple at 105°C with an ESR of 50mΩ dissipates I²R = 0.05W. In a small can with poor airflow, that can raise core temperature 15°C, halving the effective lifetime. Always calculate: ΔT_core = I_ripple² × ESR × R_th (thermal resistance, typically 20–40°C/W for small cans).
End-of-life definition. Electrolytics don't fail abruptly — they degrade. The standard EOL spec is ±20% capacitance change and 200% of initial tan δ (or ESR). A design that works at -20% capacitance is fine. A design that needs exactly 100µF with tight tolerance should not use an aluminum electrolytic.
Voltage derating. Unlike tantalum, aluminum electrolytics don't need aggressive derating. Running a 50V part on a 48V rail is generally fine — the oxide layer is self-healing and won't suffer the catastrophic failure modes of tantalum. That said, 10–20% derating extends lifetime and is cheap insurance.
Package and Lead Types
- Radial (through-hole): The classic. 5mm–18mm diameter, 2.5mm–7.5mm lead spacing. Still dominant in industrial, audio, and power supply boards where automated insertion is used.
- SMD (V-chip): Surface-mount cans, typically 4mm–18mm diameter. Be careful with reflow profiles — electrolytics don't love extended high-temperature exposure. Most SMD electrolytics are rated for 1–2 reflow cycles at 250°C peak.
- Snap-in: Large cans (22mm–35mm+) with snap-in terminals for high-power applications. Used in inverter DC links, large SMPS, and audio amplifiers. Capacitance ranges from 100µF to 68,000µF+.
- Screw terminal: The biggest cans (35mm–90mm). Used in industrial drives, UPS systems, and grid-tie inverters. These are custom-order territory — lead times can be 16–26 weeks.
Top Series by Application
General Purpose — Nichicon UHE / Rubycon YXF — 105°C, 2000–10000 hours. Covers 90% of design needs. Both widely stocked. For second-source, Panasonic FC series is equivalent.
Long Life — Rubycon ZLJ / Nichicon UCY — 105°C, 10000–12000 hours. Use these for sealed enclosures or elevated ambient environments where you can't afford a fan. The price premium over general-purpose is typically 20–40%.
Low ESR — Panasonic FR / United Chemi-Con KZN — Impedance under 50mΩ for common values. These are the go-to for SMPS output filtering. Pair a low-ESR electrolytic with a small MLCC in parallel for wideband decoupling.
High Ripple — Nichicon GY Series — Rated for 2–4× the ripple current of general-purpose parts in the same can size. Critical for PFC output capacitors and other high-ripple applications.
Automotive — Rubycon TXV / Panasonic FK — AEC-Q200 qualified, 125°C rating. These cover under-hood applications. Lead times run longer than commercial parts — budget 16–24 weeks.

Aluminum electrolytics are heavy and bulky — shipping costs matter. For production quantities, factor in freight. Common values (100µF–1000µF, 16V–50V) are interchangeable across brands with near-identical footprints, giving you flexibility when one brand goes on allocation.
