Wolfspeed Introduces Transparent SiC Substrates.

Wolfspeed has commercially introduced its proprietary transparent silicon carbide (TSiC) technology, extending SiC beyond power electronics into augmented reality (AR), quantum computing, and advanced optical applications. The technology is based on optical-grade substrates engineered for low optical absorption and high wafer flatness.

The introduction builds on Wolfspeed’s more than 35 years of silicon carbide development, including its earlier work in LED technology and its experience manufacturing high-purity semi-insulating (HPSI) wafers. The company is applying this materials expertise to optical applications that require precise substrate characteristics and controlled light transmission.

Silicon carbide offers several properties relevant to next-generation optical systems, including a high refractive index, low birefringence, mechanical hardness, and high thermal conductivity. These characteristics make it a potential material for AR waveguides, which guide display light through compact optical structures. According to Wolfspeed, SiC-based waveguides could support wider fields of view and improved image quality while enabling smaller and lighter wearable devices.

TSiC technology also has potential applications in quantum computing. Silicon carbide can provide a material platform capable of hosting quantum bits (qubits), preserving their quantum states and enabling the transmission of quantum information through light. Integrating these functions within a single SiC crystal could offer an alternative to approaches that rely on multiple materials for quantum storage, processing, and optical communication.

The material’s combination of optical, electrical, and thermal properties is central to its potential in these emerging applications. However, developing suitable substrates and manufacturing processes remains important as optical and quantum systems move toward larger-scale deployment.

Wolfspeed is supporting the technology with its intellectual property portfolio and ongoing substrate development activities. The company is advancing 200 mm optical-grade SiC substrates and developing 300 mm TSiC technology to meet future market requirements. These larger wafer formats are intended to support evolving manufacturing processes as demand for advanced optical materials increases.

With its commercial introduction of TSiC, Wolfspeed is positioning silicon carbide as a platform for applications beyond conventional semiconductor power devices, particularly where optical performance, thermal management, and material stability are critical.
