Nuvoton and Qt Enable Advanced Graphics Without External Memory for Cost-Efficient Products

ELE Times

Nuvoton Technology Corporation Japan (NTCJ) and Qt Group have announced that Nuvoton’s Gerda HMI controller platform is now supported by Qt for MCUs. This combination allows manufacturers to develop high-quality graphical user interfaces without using external memory, helping reduce system costs. It supports applications such as car and motorcycle instrument clusters, head-up displays and home appliance control panels. The technology enables clear graphics, smooth animations and responsive touch controls while keeping products affordable for large-scale manufacturing.

Key benefits:

  1. Maximized memory efficiency for lower system cost
  2. Flexible, secure GUI updates OTA
  3. Faster from design to production

Qt for MCUs provides developers with ready-to-use software components, advanced graphics tools and a flexible development environment to build user-friendly interfaces more easily. When used with Nuvoton’s Gerda platform, it supports high-resolution graphics, smooth animations and quick touch responses without requiring external memory. This helps manufacturers reduce hardware costs while delivering better display experiences. The capability is particularly useful for software-defined vehicles, which require more advanced in-car interfaces. It also supports the growing need for cost-effective memory usage and over-the-air (OTA) software updates in connected products.

Features:

  1. Maximized memory efficiency for lower system cost

Gerda’s large built-in RAM, together with its rich set of display, connectivity, and control interfaces, enables standalone HMI systems without the need for external memory. Qt for MCUs’ advanced graphics optimization and Gerda’s texture compression work together to reduce the memory footprint of the graphical user interface (GUI). The result is a lower component count and total system cost, which is particularly important in high-volume products.

2. Flexible, secure GUI updates OTA

As software-defined vehicles spread, with connected appliances and two-wheelers close behind, over-the-air feature and GUI updates are becoming standard. The Qt for MCUs development environment and Gerda’s security features enable safe, efficient updates, so developers can change interfaces and add features long after a product ships.

3. Faster from design to production

Qt for MCUs’ integrated development environment, ready-made GUI components, intuitive QML language, simulation, and agentic AI skills smooth collaboration between design and software teams and streamline the workflow from design through implementation and verification. Combined with Gerda, this reduces GUI development complexity, helping teams build reliable applications in less time and at lower cost.

“The quality of the user experience has become a key differentiator for modern products. By combining Gerda with Qt for MCUs, customers can deliver premium graphical user experiences while balancing performance, memory efficiency, and system cost.” said Yoshihide Kanakubo, Vice President, Battery and Automotive BG, Nuvoton.

“For years, the choice of a microcontroller was between an interface people enjoy using and a system cost the product could carry. That trade-off is what we set out to remove. Working with Nuvoton, teams can now build the kind of interface users already expect, on hardware priced for high-volume production.” said Michele Rossi, Director, Qt MCUs Product Management, Qt Group
