NY Loves Nanotech Rebrands as Semiconductor Alliance NY

SAN FRANCISCO — New York’s long-running semiconductor marketing consortium has a new name. At its annual dessert reception during SEMICON West on Oct. 14, New York Loves Nanotech unveiled its new brand: Semiconductor Alliance NY.

The new identity debuted on the Social Terrace of the W Hotel, where the Semiconductor Alliance NY logo appeared alongside the official New York State logo under the tagline “America’s fastest growing semiconductor ecosystem. Be a part of it.” The pairing, and the message, line up closely with how Empire State Development, the state’s economic development agency, now pitches New York’s chip sector.
“New name. New chapter. Same commitment,” the group says on its new website, adding that the change was made to better reflect what it is today: a statewide alliance of the people, organizations and ideas behind New York’s semiconductor industry.
The organization is a consortium of economic developers, research institutions and private-sector partners. Its mission is to accelerate New York’s high-tech corridor by attracting investment, building out the supply chain, preparing sites for high-volume manufacturing, supporting leading-edge R&D, and developing the workforce and entrepreneurial ecosystem. Partners include Empire State Development and National Grid, and the group’s outreach has been coordinated through the New York State Economic Development Council in Albany.
A brand born in the fab-hunting era
The NY Loves Nanotech name traces back to 1999, when the Center for Economic Growth in New York’s Capital Region launched a global outreach program aimed at landing a chip production facility. That effort helped bring Advanced Micro Devices to Luther Forest in Malta, where the company announced plans for a fab in 2006 — the site that became GlobalFoundries, which began large-scale operations there in 2013. In the intervening years, SEMATECH moved from Austin to Albany in 2010, and the group hosted the World Semiconductor Council with the Semiconductor Industry Association in 2012.
From “nanotech” to semiconductors
Dropping “nanotech” in favor of “semiconductor” reflects how much the state’s pitch has changed. The nanotechnology branding dates from the period when Albany built its reputation around nanoscale research; today New York is selling a full semiconductor ecosystem. NY CREATES’ Albany NanoTech Complex has been designated the first flagship facility of the National Semiconductor Technology Center and is home to the High-NA EUV Lithography R&D Center. Micron is building a memory megafab in Clay, near Syracuse, and the state’s Green CHIPS Act offers incentives aimed at attracting chipmakers and their suppliers.
The alliance backs that pitch with numbers: more than $124 billion in new semiconductor investment in New York since 2022, $13 billion in state incentives for semiconductor and supply chain companies, and $550 million invested in workforce development for advanced manufacturing. Its new website maps more than 150 industry and supply chain companies across the state and points companies looking to expand to GO-SEMI, the Governor’s Office of Semiconductor Expansion, Management, and Integration, for site selection support.
