Qorvo Introduces X-Band RFFE Targeting AESA Radar Designs

Embedded

Qorvo Inc. has introduced an X-band RF front-end solution designed for active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar systems. The architecture combines transmit drive, receive performance, and RF front-end control within the constrained space of an array lattice, reducing the number of external components required around each antenna element.

At the center of the solution is the QPX0252, a four-channel beamformer IC covering 7.9 to 12 GHz. Its transmit output is designed to directly drive compatible Qorvo front-end modules (FEMs), including the QPF5012, eliminating the need for separate external driver amplifiers. Companion devices provide GaN power-amplifier bias control and RF switching, allowing additional front-end functions to be integrated around the beamformer.

The approach addresses a specific challenge in X-band AESA architectures. Flat-panel phased-array antennas use tightly controlled lattice spacing, limiting the physical area available for beamforming, front-end modules, and power-control circuitry. External driver amplifiers, discrete PA control circuits, and separate RF switching components can consume additional space and add interfaces that complicate array design. Integrating more of these functions at the front end can therefore reduce RF content at each lattice position.

The QPX0252 also provides selectable receive operating characteristics. In high-power radar configurations, the associated FEM establishes a low system noise figure, while the beamformer can operate in a high-linearity mode. Qorvo states that its system-level analysis shows up to 20 dB higher cascaded input P1dB than other solutions the company evaluated. The higher input compression point is intended to improve receive-path linearity in environments where strong signals can challenge the front end.

The beamformer is compatible with Qorvo X-band FEMs already in production across different power levels and configurations, allowing designers to build front-end architectures around existing transmit and receive components. Compatible gate-bias, drain-bias, and RF-switch-control devices are also available and support transmit-to-receive switching in less than 100 ns.

QPX0252 samples and evaluation kits are available for development. The combination of four-channel beamforming, direct FEM drive, configurable receive linearity, and integrated front-end control is intended to help radar designers reduce RF component count and make more efficient use of the limited area available within X-band AESA array lattices.
