Top of the Week
- Synopsys unveiled a portfolio of domain-specific long-horizon agents that can reason, plan, and execute multi-step engineering workflows across verification, system validation, implementation, analog, manufacturing, simulation and analysis. Synopsys also inked a multi-year agreement with OpenAI to develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized model optimized to use its EDA tools for semiconductor design workflows.
- Semiconductor Engineering released its Photonics eBook, an in-depth look at the technologies, applications, and ongoing research that will be needed to address the growing bandwidth problem in data centers and semiconductor packages.
Lam Research proposed a self-aligned CFET architecture (right) that could extend CMOS scaling below 10 angstroms. Its digital-twin modeling produced a 0.0094 μm² 6T SRAM bit cell, which is 52.7% smaller than N3 technology, while maintaining at least a 10 nm overlay window across critical contact layers.- TSMC is reportedly evaluating a semiconductor manufacturing investment in Texas that would expand its U.S. production footprint beyond its $265B Arizona buildout, per Bloomberg.
- S. Korea’s semiconductor exports surged over 262% year over year to a record $60B in September, driven by stronger memory demand, higher shipment volumes and rising memory prices.
Threats and defenses
- VUSec and SSSA researchers uncovered Branch Target Reuse, a new Spectre-v2 attack targeting just-in-time compilers. They demonstrated an end-to-end Linux attack that can leak arbitrary memory — including a root password hash — even with existing Spectre defenses enabled. Hardware vendors said existing mitigation mechanisms can address BTR, with protections deployed through software.
- Nvidia launched its Open Agent Safety Platform, combining open-source software with hardware-based controls for agentic AI security. Its Sentry reference design runs on BlueField-4 DPUs to monitor agent behavior and enforce security policies independently in silicon, quarantining agents that move outside defined boundaries. Cadence is integrating the platform with its AI Super Agents to add runtime controls around autonomous chip-design workflows.
- Fraunhofer completed silicon validation of its RISC-V Secure Element and made the OpenTitan-based design available as licensable security IP for SoCs, ASICs and chiplets. It integrates HW root-of-trust functions including secure boot, key storage and device identity.
Physical AI
- AMD plans to acquire World Labs, which develops spatial-intelligence AI models that simulate interactive 3D environments for robotics. The $8.2B all-stock deal is expected to close by the end of 2026.
- SiMa.ai raised $150M to develop physical AI solutions, including silicon with 1,000+ TOPS and an agentic software environment.
- Physical AI is pushing more intelligence into edge devices, where systems must turn sensor data into real-time action, increasing demands for compute, memory, connectivity, power efficiency, and security.
Capacity
- Infineon opened the first phase of a new backend manufacturing hub in Bangkok, adding semiconductor assembly, test and wafer-test capacity.
- Samsung Electro-Mechanics will invest about US $4.9B to expand FCBGA package-substrate capacity in South Korea and Vietnam for AI servers. Also, TOPPAN opened its first overseas FC-BGA substrate production site in Singapore, targeting large, high-layer-count substrates for AI processors and networking equipment.
- VSMC, the VIS-NXP joint venture, opened its 300mm fab in Singapore and is also reportedly considering a second Singapore fab.

Memory
- Micron says memory supply will remain tight through 2028, with more than 75% of its 2027 output already committed. It also said 2027 HBM pricing will be significantly higher than 2026 levels. Micron reported record Q4 revenue of $54B, up from $11B a year earlier.
- HBM is expected to consume nearly 30% of DRAM manufacturers’ wafer capacity in 2027, up from about 20% currently, a Samsung executive told Reuters.
- Teradyne introduced its Magnum E2 high-speed memory test system, supporting next-generation LPDDR6 and DDR6, as well as GDDR7 and NAND flash for growing AI and HPC memory requirements.
- SK hynix’s U.S. subsidiary Solidigm is pondering an IPO, reports Reuters. SK says nothing has been decided.
- Conventional DRAM contract prices are expected to rise 10% to 15% in 4Q26 and NAND flash prices 15% to 20%, per TrendForce. Enterprise SSD bit demand is projected to grow more than 80% in 2026.
Photonics
- JEDEC published the industry’s first silicon photonics reliability standard, establishing common qualification and reliability requirements as optical interconnects scale for AI and data-center systems.
- Counterpoint says network bottlenecks are becoming a bigger constraint on AI accelerator performance, with GPUs spending roughly 12.5% of their time waiting on the network in some workloads. The firm expects near-packaged optics to begin sampling in late 2026 or early 2027, followed by CPO as AI systems demand faster, more power-efficient scale-up interconnects.
Market trends
- Revenue across the broader semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, including foundries, IDMs, packaging and test, reached a record $96.6B in 2Q26, up 25% YoY, reports Counterpoint.
- Bain says AI has reversed the long-running advantage of software over hardware, with semiconductor and hardware stocks growing at a 24% compound annual rate from 2020 to 2026 versus 6% for software.

- California now exempts certain chemical mixtures containing 70% or less gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) from state permitting, reporting and other regulatory requirements. GBL is used as a solvent in semiconductor photoresists. Controls on pure GBL remain.
- Lam Research opened a 470k-sq.ft. logistics and supply hub in Livermore, California.
- S. Korea and the U.S. are advancing a $22B gas-fired power project in Texas, part of a broader Korea-U.S. strategic investment package of up to $350B. The 6.47-GW project is aimed at meeting rising power demand from semiconductor plants and AI data centers.
Europe
- Fraunhofer IAF announced newly launched research initiatives in AI-assisted chip design and chips for AI applications, including AI-accelerated CMOS design and hardware for edge AI. The institute is also showcasing its III-V semiconductor pilot-line capabilities for heterogeneous integration and chip manufacturing.
- Global Electronics Association and the Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics signed an agreement to accelerate industrial adoption of advanced packaging technologies.
Asia
- Semifive inked a deal with Mobilint to develop a robotics AI processor under South Korea’s K-On-Device AI Semiconductor program.
- Air Liquide will invest more than US$193M in production units supplying ultra-pure gases to support the expansion of an existing advanced logic-chip fab in southern Japan.

- Infineon will supply SiC power devices for Eaton’s MVSST 2.0 solid-state transformer platform, designed to support emerging 800 VDC architectures for high-density AI data centers.
- Amazon broadened its use of Synopsys products to include application-optimized silicon IP for custom chips and AWS infrastructure, with the companies also planning custom agentic-AI capabilities.
- Anthropic’s IPO filing revealed that it is the customer behind Broadcom’s previously disclosed AI compute-financing arrangement of up to $42B.
- Applied Materials added Kioxia and Besi as partners at its $5B EPIC Center, expanding work on next-gen memory and advanced packaging.

- CScale exited stealth with $145M in funding to commercialize an optical interconnect for AI scale-up that is architected to contain optical failures without interrupting compute.
- Efficient Computer raised $97M to ship its energy-efficient general-purpose processor in volume and scale the architecture to data center-class performance.
- Volantis raised $88M for its optical interconnect that uses integrated micro-VCSELs to connect large numbers of memory chips into a unified pool for AI inference.
- Zenithon AI raised $10M to develop AI world models for extreme physics applications, including semiconductor manufacturing.

New Technologies
Test, measurement, and failure analysis
- Keysight introduced a 20 GHz dual channel analog signal generator with ultra-low noise, calibrated output power, and software mode switching to optimize performance across different applications.
- Hamamatsu Photonics developed an inverted emission microscope for failure analysis of advanced packages including HBM, AI chiplets and 2.5D/3D devices.
Compute, embedded, and engineering tools
- AMD started sampling a Versal adaptive SoC in a space-grade organic lidless package designed to support missions lasting up to 15 years. AMD also introduced an agentic AI assistant to accelerate the embedded development flow.
- Siemens announced several updates to its Simcenter Testlab engineering software, including improvements to how the system aids structural dynamics, system NVH prediction, and AI-ready data preparation workflows.
Connectivity and memory
- Infineon expanded its USB 20Gbps ecosystem with a PCIe Gen4 x4 add-on card, a 10-meter USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 active optical cable developed with EverProX, and a 20Gbps USB connectivity collaboration with ASMedia.
- Everspin demonstrated what it says is the first CXL-connected MRAM platform, creating a persistent-memory tier between DRAM and NAND.
Adoptions & wins
- Siemens said naval engineering company Caponnetto Hueber used its digital-twin technology to improve hydrodynamic performance and sustainability in vessel design.
- Infineon will supply SiC power devices for Eaton’s MVSST 2.0 solid-state transformer platform.
Research
University of Tokyo, NTU and others grew boron carbon nitride as a high-performance p-type semiconductor, with hole mobility up to 100 cm²/V·s, on-current above 0.9 mA/μm, and on/off ratios up to 10⁸.
Purdue and UCLA “experimentally quantify the impact of Cu microstructure on the TSV-induced residual stress within silicon.”
Stockholm University researchers developed an electrically tunable superconducting diode that allows supercurrent to flow in one direction while suppressing it in the other, without an applied magnetic field.
Yale and EPFL researchers each reported advances in integrated lasers, with Yale demonstrating an Nd laser and amplifier platform with a 2.9 μW threshold, 46.6 dB gain and more than 12 dBm output, and EPFL developed a silicon-nitride laser that remains self-injection locked across its full drive-current range, with sub-10-Hz linewidths and mode-hop-free 1.5-GHz chirps.
Security
Vulnerabilities and guidance
- NIST released a draft 5G security white paper on false base stations, finding that 5G standards have reduced privacy and location-tracking risks, but devices can still be vulnerable to denial-of-service attacks.
- NSA set new post-quantum cryptography requirements for National Security Systems, including quantum-resistant support for new commercial systems beginning in 2027 and phaseout of incompatible legacy systems by 2030.
- A major data breach at the Pentagon’s Defense Manpower Data Center exposed the unencrypted personal information of over 3 million people. The breach came as result of a security vulnerability in the agency’s file-sharing system.
- Citrix disclosed eight new vulnerabilities affecting its Citrix NetScaler ADC and Citrix NetScaler Gateway products, including two actively exploited critical, zero-day vulnerabilities that can enable remote code execution, according to CISA. All of CISA’s alerts for the week can be found here.
- A security researcher uncovered an access-control vulnerability in Flock Safety’s infrastructure that exposed ArcGIS location data, allowing him to map more than 300,000 Flock-associated surveillance devices across the U.S.
- PWC released a report finding that 84% of security and finance leaders expect cyber budgets to rise over the next year amid rising AI threats.

- The shift toward AI-defined vehicles is pushing automotive compute, memory bandwidth, data movement, and validation requirements higher. Automakers are weighing centralized versus distributed architectures as increasingly data-heavy AI workloads strain in-vehicle networks, power budgets, and long-term safety verification.
Automotive chips
- Infineon launched a new family of digital angle sensors designed for demanding motor control applications in automotive and industrial markets.
- AMD released a new automotive-grade FPGA built for ADAS sensor applications.
- POLYN is delivering its custom engineering chip, designed to support AI-enabled braking systems through tire-road friction detection.
- Microchip expanded its automotive Ethernet portfolio with new 10BASE-T1S transceivers and integrated endpoints.
AVs, EVs
- A U. of Michigan team, with Toyota funding, developed a specialized haptic steering wheel designed to make semi-AV systems easier for drivers to use.
- Rivian issued a noncompliance safety recall for software that caused rearview camera visibility problems in its R1T, R1S, and R2 vehicles.
- Delta Electronics is collaborating with Nvidia on autonomous-driving systems.
- GM and LG Energy Solutions plan to produce lithium-manganese-rich prismatic battery cells at their Tennessee plant for future GM EVs. GM says the cells are designed to deliver 33% higher energy density than LFP at comparable cost.

- Xanadu and Bluefors are developing a modular cryogenic system for utility-scale photonic quantum computers, aimed at cooling large arrays of single-photon detectors without requiring industrial-scale cryogenic plants.
- QCi introduced its Dirac-3S photonic quantum system, built for large optimization problems. The system has been demonstrated with up to 9,980 variables, versus 949 for the current Dirac-3.
QC training/ infrastructure
- New Mexico opened the Roadrunner Quantum Lab in Albuquerque, giving quantum startups shared access to dilution refrigerators, a multi-node quantum network, testbeds and demonstration facilities. California announced a $30M investment in quantum and deep-space research, alongside new quantum-workforce initiatives.
- XeedQ will install a 4-qubit room-temperature quantum computer at Skyview High School in December, which Fairfax County Public Schools says will be the first operational quantum computer in a K-12 school.

Workforce, Education
SEMI says semiconductor workforce shortages are increasingly concentrated in advanced packaging and experienced manufacturing leadership. The U.S. could need 88,000 new engineers by 2029, while nearly 30% of Europe’s semiconductor workforce is expected to retire by 2030.
University of Arkansas launched the Arkansas Research Institute for Electronics Systems to expand semiconductor research and train undergraduate and graduate students.
A second federal judge blocked enforcement of the $100K H-1B fee, ruling that immigration agencies failed to follow required notice-and-comment procedures. The Sept. 30 order also prevents agencies from enforcing the fee under the administration’s September extension while the ruling remains in effect.
ETH Zürich professor Onur Mutlu has made his 2026 Digital Design & Computer Architecture course freely available online. The course starts with transistor and digital-logic fundamentals and progresses through Verilog, microarchitecture, pipelining, out-of-order execution, branch prediction, GPUs, memory systems, caches, and emerging computing architectures.
