Working with Vishay Dale Parts: What We've Learned

Why Vishay Dale still runs through 2026 BOMs

Vishay bought Dale in 1990 and kept the Columbus, Nebraska plant alive for the military film lines. Thirty-six years later, RN55 resistors designed into 1980s avionics are still ordered today. If you support defense, rail, or industrial programs, Dale parts are in your BOM whether you know it or not. The parts are mature and reliable; the procurement traps around them are specific and avoidable.

The families that actually show up in BOMs

  • Precision film: RN55/RN60 (MIL-PRF-10509), RNC/RNR established-reliability versions, and the commercial CMF-55. The chip resistors are CRCW — CRCW060310K0FKEA (10 kΩ, 1%, 0603) is one of the most-ordered passives we see.
  • Wirewound: RS, CW, and RWR80 (MIL-PRF-39007) for surge, high-temperature, and power applications.
  • Current sense: the WSL family — WSL2512R0500FEA is 50 mΩ, 1%, 1 W in a 2512 with roughly 0.5–5 nH series inductance.
  • Inductors: IHLP-4040DZ-01 (IHLP4040DZER100M01, 10 µH) and the axial IHA line for shielded power filtering.
  • Trimmers and thermistors: T93YA103KT20 (10 kΩ cermet trimmer) and NTCLE100E3103JB0 (10 kΩ NTC) round out the common orders.

Lessons we learned the hard way

RN55 and CMF-55 are the same chip, different paperwork. A CMF-55 1% costs roughly half an RN55D. But if your drawing calls out RN55D1001F (1 kΩ, 0.5%, 1/10 W), the mil-spec lot traceability is mandatory — QA audits will reject the cheaper substitute. For new designs, specify CMF-55 and keep the money; for legacy drawings, buy exactly what's written. Substituting either direction without checking your customer's flow-down is how rework budgets die.

RN55 is a favorite counterfeit target. Fake RN55s show up with carbon-film elements, wrong body color, and lazy marking fonts. Carbon film drifts with humidity and can't hold 50 ppm/°C. We verify with a 4-wire Kelvin measurement at two temperatures and buy only through authorized channels. A $0.15 counterfeit that drifts out of spec inside a servo loop costs more than the connector it's wired to.

Measure low-ohmic WSL parts properly. 50 mΩ doesn't exist on a 2-wire DMM. Use 4-wire Kelvin, and remember the solder joint adds milliohms of its own — the WSL's 75 ppm TCR and 1% tolerance are only as good as your measurement setup. Sense lines need to be routed separately, not shared with the force path.

Don't swap IHLP for look-alike inductors. The 10 µH IHLP-4040DZ-01 saturates around 21 A, but its thermal current rating is lower, and generic substitutes have completely different DC-bias curves. Verify Isat and Irms against your ripple current, or keep the Dale part and stop testing.

Sourcing reality in 2026

Stock CRCW and CMF values ship same-day from distributors, and popular RN55 values like RN55D1001F are still on the shelf. Non-stock values, 0.1% tolerance, and mil-lot documentation run 10–16 weeks from the factory. Expect WSL2512R0500FEA around $0.30–$0.60 at 1k pieces and IHLP-4040 between $1.20 and $2.50. Watch Vishay's 52-week obsolescence notices — RWR/RNR mil lines get last-time-buy windows, and those windows close fast.

Our recommendation

Standardize on CRCW and CMF-55 for new designs, keep RN55 and the RNC lines for legacy and military drawings, and buy everything through verified stock. Search parts for the exact Dale number, or upload your BOM and let partscubeglobal.com flag obsolescence and lead-time risks before they hit your schedule. Thirty years of Dale BOMs tell us the part is rarely the problem — the supply chain around it is.
