Why Vishay Dale Still Matters on Your 2026 BOM

Dale Electronics started in Columbus, Nebraska, in 1951 with a wirewound power resistor — the RH-25, a finned heatsink design — and grew into the largest wirewound resistor maker outside Japan. Vishay Intertechnology bought a 50% stake in 1985 and completed ownership in 1988. The "Vishay Dale" name has since stood for one of the broadest passive-component catalogs in the industry: resistors, current-sense shunts, inductors, thermistors, and networks, in commercial, automotive, and military grades.

Why revisit it in 2026? Because the families that carry your power and sensing functions — CRCW chip resistors, WSL current-sense shunts, IHLP power inductors — sit on nearly every power supply, EV battery board, and industrial control card. When one of them goes into allocation or end-of-life, the substitution decision is never "any resistor will do." It's "which series is the qualified drop-in" — and that's where knowing the family structure pays off. We've seen boards stall on exactly this once the layout is committed.

CRCW Series: The Workhorse Thick-Film Chip Resistor

The CRCW is the default 1% chip resistor on countless BOMs. Range: 1Ω to 1MΩ, packages from 0201 to 2512, with AEC-Q200-qualified versions for automotive. The CRCW-IF e3 pulse-proof variant handles pulses up to 10kW with ΔR/R ≤ 1% after 1000h at 70°C — useful where inrush or discharge currents kill standard chips. Typical order codes: CRCW06034K70FKEA (4.7kΩ), CRCW060349R9FKEA (49.9Ω), plus zero-ohm jumpers like CRCW08050000Z0EAHP.

WSL Series: Power Metal Strip Current-Sense Resistors

For current sensing, the WSL family uses a metal-strip element instead of thick film. Resistance from 0.0005Ω to 0.5Ω, 1% tolerance, TCR ≤ ±75ppm, power 0.1W to 2W, packages 0603 to 2816. The WSLP variants push to 3W while staying as low as 0.0005Ω, are AEC-Q200 qualified, and are rated to 170°C — a good fit for automotive battery management. A typical 10mΩ example is the WSLP1206R0100FEA. Beyond precision, the strip construction gives low inductance, which matters in fast-switching DC/DC converters and high-side/low-side sensing.

IHLP Series: Composite Power Inductors

IHLP is the brand's biggest inductor family: low-profile, shielded composite inductors from 1212 (3×3mm) up to 5050, with profile heights from 1.0mm to 13.0mm. Four performance tiers cover the range: the original -01 (commercial) and -A1 (automotive), the low-DCR -11/-1A, the 155°C-rated -51/-5A, and the 180°C-rated -81/-8A. Many are AEC-Q200 qualified, and some versions run DC/DC conversion up to 5MHz, with inductance spanning roughly 0.05µH to 100µH. Example: the IHLP-1616AB-01 covers 0.047–1.0µH in a 4.0×4.0×1.2mm footprint; the IHLP-4040QZ-5A is a common 155°C noise-filter choice. Note that the order-code suffix encodes the grade — we always double-check it before ordering, because mixing up -01 and -5A parts is a classic ordering error.
