Why Vicor Modules Deserve a Second Look in 2026

AI accelerators, 48 V rack buses, and high-voltage EV platforms have pushed board-level power density far beyond what a discrete buck converter can deliver. That is exactly where Vicor's factorized power architecture (FPA) lives: split the conversion into a high-efficiency regulator, a fixed-ratio transformer, and a point-of-load current multiplier. The catch — and we have hit it more than once — is that some of these modules are now flagged end-of-life at major distributors, so knowing which parts matter, and what to expect from them, saves you from a mid-production redesign.

The Ten Parts to Know

1. DCM4623 — Isolated, Regulated DC-DC

The DCM family covers 9–420 V input with regulated 3.3–48 V outputs at up to 1300 W and 96% peak efficiency. The 4623-pin package (e.g., DCM4623TD2N17C8M00) is the workhorse for converting high-voltage battery or rectified mains into 12/48 V rails. If you need isolation plus regulation in one module, this is where we start.

2. BCM6123 — Fixed-Ratio Bus Converter

The BCM family converts 36–800 V to 2.4–55 V at up to 150 A with 98% peak efficiency, in a package as small as 22.0 × 16.5 × 6.7 mm. The classic use is 400 V to a SELV 48 V bus (e.g., BCM6123TD1E5135T0R), with units paralleled for kilowatt-level loads. Unregulated by design — pair it with a regulated stage downstream.

3. VTM48EF020T040 — Current Multiplier

Takes 26–55 V in and delivers 2 V at 80 A (160 W) at 92.4% efficiency with 2.25 kV isolation. This is the point-of-load answer for CPU/ASIC rails where every milliohm of board resistance matters — the VTM's low output impedance keeps the PCB trace budget practical.

4. PRM48BF480T400A00 — Pre-Regulator

38–55 V in to 48 V out (adjustable up to 55 V) at 8.33 A, 400 W, 97.4% efficiency, −40 to +125 °C. It pairs with VTM modules to form a regulated factorized bus. Sourcing warning: several distributor listings mark this series obsolete — verify lifecycle status before locking it into a long-run BOM.

5. PFM4414 — AC-DC Front End

The PFM4414 series puts power-factor correction plus an isolated DC-DC stage into one board-mount module, turning AC line input into an isolated, regulated DC bus for downstream BCM/VTM converters. One module replaces a discrete PFC stage, isolation, and bulk regulation.

6. PI3740-00-LGIZ — Cool-Power ZVS Buck-Boost

8–60 V in, 10–50 V out, up to 8 A (6.5 A on the −00-LGIZ variant), 96% efficiency, 1 MHz switching in a 10 × 14 × 2.5 mm SiP. True buck-boost with smooth mode transition, constant-current/constant-voltage modes, and single-wire parallel sharing — ideal for 12/24 V battery systems and LED drivers.

7. PI3741 — Fixed-Output Buck-Boost

Same ZVS buck-boost family with 21–60 V input and fixed 24 V or 48 V outputs at 140–150 W. Pick it when the load needs a stable bus over a wide battery range and you want the fewest external parts.

8. Maxi/Mini/Micro Bricks — the Legacy Workhorse

The full-, half- and quarter-brick series still ships in industrial power shelves everywhere. A classic example is the V24A28H400BL: 24 V in, 28 V out, 400 W. Nothing exotic, but the standardized pinouts and mechanicals make these easy to cross-reference and replace.

9. QPI-21-LZ — Quiet Power Input Filter

A drop-in input filter that attenuates the conducted noise generated by DC-DC converters, simplifying EMI compliance in front of a module. Small part, outsized impact on a certification schedule.

10. Cool-Power PI35xx 48 V Buck Family

ZVS buck regulators for 48 V input buses (PI354x generation) feeding low-voltage rails in telecom and data center equipment — the discrete alternative when you do not need the full FPA chain.

Sourcing Notes for 2026

Several FPA modules (VTM48EF020, PRM48BF480) are now listed as obsolete or discontinued at major distributors — check real stock before your next design review. Expect PI3740-00-LGIZ-class Cool-Power parts to run roughly US$24–36 each in single-unit pricing. Module lead times trend long, so quote early and keep an alternate family in mind.
