Top 10 KOA Speer Electronics Parts Every Hardware Engineer Should Know

Why KOA Speer in 2026

If you've ever designed a power supply, an automotive ECU, or an industrial control board, you've already used KOA Speer resistors — possibly without realizing it. The Japanese manufacturer has been a top-tier passive component supplier for decades, and their parts are first-source listed in countless OEM BOMs. In 2026, the reasons to stock them are practical: the breadth of AEC-Q200 qualified parts, the anti-sulfuration (-RT) technology for harsh environments, and the wide-terminal (reverse-geometry) designs that squeeze more power from standard footprints. These are the series we see first-sourced in customer BOMs all the time — parts that have survived production, not just a datasheet.

Here are the ten series we'd put in any parts library.

1. RK73H — The Workhorse 1% Thick Film Resistor

This is the part you'll reach for first — we order it by the reel. The RK73H series covers 1 Ω to 10 MΩ, tolerances down to ±0.5%, and TCR of ±100 ppm/°C — good enough for most non-precision applications. Sizes from 01005 to 2512, power up to 2 W (in 2512). A specific example: RK73H1HTTC5490F is a 549 Ω, ±1%, 0.05 W resistor in a 0201 package, AEC-Q200 qualified.

Where to use it: Pull-ups, series terminators, voltage dividers, general-purpose biasing. Standard BOM filler, but the AEC-Q200 variant means one BOM line for both prototype and production.

2. RK73B — The 5% Cost-Optimized Alternative

When tolerance doesn't matter (LED current limits, weak pull-ups), we default to the RK73B. ±2% and ±5% tolerance, ±200 to ±400 ppm/°C TCR. Same package range as the RK73H, for less per thousand.

3. RN73H — Precision Thin Film (±5 ppm/°C)

When your reference voltage or feedback divider needs stability over temperature, the RN73H delivers: TCR down to ±5 ppm/°C, tolerance to ±0.05%, and endurance at 85°C for 3,000 hours with ΔR of ±0.1%. Available in 0402 to 1210.

Where to use it: Precision voltage dividers, op-amp gain networks, ADC reference circuits, sensor signal conditioning.

4. RN73R — Anti-Sulfur Precision Thin Film

Automotive electronics in high-sulfur environments (engine bays, battery compartments near venting cells) suffer from silver-sulfide growth that shorts standard resistors. The RN73R series adds an anti-sulfuration barrier that passes ASTM B809 testing while maintaining ±10 ppm/°C TCR.

5. TLR — Metal Plate Current Sense (0.5 mΩ to 270 mΩ)

Current sensing is where precision matters most, and the TLR series uses a metal alloy resistive element instead of thick film. This delivers TCR as low as ±50 ppm/°C and ultra-low resistance values down to 0.5 mΩ (TLR 3AW variant, 2 W, 2512). Power ratings from 0.5 W to 5 W. When a customer's sense resistor keeps failing in the field, this is our first replacement pick.

Where to use it: DC-DC converter output current monitoring, motor phase current sensing, battery management systems, load-switch current limiting.

6. WK73R — Wide Terminal High-Power Thick Film

Conventional chip resistors are limited by their termination geometry. The WK73R series uses wide-side terminations, moving more heat into the PCB pads. This translates to 0.33 W to 3 W in a standard chip footprint. For example, a WK73R in a 1225 package handles 3 W — enough to replace a much larger through-hole part.

Where to use it: Pre-load resistors, power supply output bleeders, snubber circuits where space is tight.

7. SG73P — Surge-Withstanding Precision

Standard thick film resistors fail under repetitive pulse stress — the film develops hot spots and drifts. The SG73P is designed to withstand pulse and surge conditions while maintaining ±0.5% tolerance and ±100 ppm/°C TCR. Sizes from 0402 to 1210. If your inrush circuit drifts after a few thousand cycles, this is usually the fix.

Where to use it: Inrush limiter companions, capacitor pre-charge circuits, hot-swap controller sense resistors.

8. SR73 — Low-Resistance Current Sense Thick Film

When the TLR's metal plate cost isn't justified, the SR73 gives you thick-film current sensing from 24 mΩ to 10 Ω. Tolerance to ±0.5%, sizes 0201 to 2512. TCR is higher (±400 to ±1000 ppm/°C), so only use it where temperature variation is modest (±25°C ambient).

9. UR73V — Automotive Low-Resistance Flat Chip

The UR73V is KOA Speer's answer to the demand for compact current sensing in automotive modules. Resistance from 10 mΩ to 1 Ω, ±1% tolerance, ±75 ppm/°C TCR (best in class for thick-film sensing). AEC-Q200 qualified. The 0805 package handles 0.5 W.

Where to use it: Automotive LED driver feedback, seat motor current monitoring, PTC heater controllers.

10. WK73S — Wide Terminal Current Sense

Combine the wide-terminal thermal advantage with low resistance: the WK73S offers 10 mΩ to 9.76 Ω in a wide-terminal package that handles 0.75 W to 2 W. This is the part to use when your current-sense resistor is also a significant power dissipator in a small board area.

Sourcing Note

Many of these series have lead times that fluctuate with raw material availability. The RK73H and RK73B are typically well-stocked, but the TLR and WK73R wide-terminal parts can run 8–12 weeks on allocation. Check current inventory before locking your BOM — a single 8-week line item can stall the whole build.
