Resistor Types Guide: Carbon Film, Metal Film, Wire Wound, SMD

Resistors are the most common component on any PCB, yet choosing the wrong type causes field failures, noise issues, and assembly defects. Field failures we've debugged usually traced back to the resistor. Here's when to use each type — and which Chinese alternatives work as drop-in replacements.
Carbon Film Resistors (CFR)
Best for: General-purpose, low-cost applications
Typical tolerance: ±5%
Temperature coefficient: 250-450 ppm/°C
Power range: 0.125W - 2W
CFRs are the budget choice — our default for pull-up/down, LED current limiting, and bias networks where precision isn't critical.
Chinese alternatives: Yageo CFR series, UniOhm CF series
Metal Film Resistors (MFR)
Best for: Precision circuits, audio, measurement
Typical tolerance: ±1% (down to ±0.1%)
Temperature coefficient: 15-100 ppm/°C
Power range: 0.125W - 3W
MFRs cost 2-3x more than CFR but offer 5x better stability — the extra cents are cheap insurance in voltage dividers, feedback networks, and timing circuits.
Chinese alternatives: Yageo MFR series, SUSUMING metal film series
Wire Wound Resistors
Best for: High power, surge protection, current sensing
Typical tolerance: ±1% to ±5%
Temperature coefficient: 20-400 ppm/°C
Power range: 1W - 50W+
Wire wound handles transient energy that would destroy film resistors — we've seen inrush kill film parts on power-up. Essential for inrush limiting, snubbers, and power supply feedback.
Note: Inductive construction — not suitable for high-frequency circuits.
Chinese alternatives: RONGTE, YOUCHUAN power wire wound series
SMD/Chip Resistors
Best for: Automated assembly, high-density boards
Common packages: 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206, 2010, 2512
Typical tolerance: ±1% (down to ±0.01%)
Temperature coefficient: 50-200 ppm/°C
SMD resistors dominate modern designs — the 0402 package accounts for over 60% of new designs. We usually prototype in 0603, dropping to 0402 when the layout forces it.
