Where PCB Assembly Costs Come From

1. Component Cost Optimization

Use Chinese alternatives where performance allows. A GD32F103C8T6 costs 40-60% less than STM32F103C8T6 with nearly identical performance. We've made this swap for customers before — often the fastest win in the BOM.

Consolidate passives. Using one 10K resistor value across your board instead of 5 different values reduces feeder occupancy and pick-and-place cost.

Buy in standard package sizes. Avoid 0201 passives unless absolutely necessary — they require specialized equipment and have lower yield.

2. Design for Manufacturability

  • Keep all SMT on one side if possible (half the assembly steps)
  • Standardize pad sizes for passives (use 0603 or 0805 wherever possible)
  • Add fiducial marks — reduces setup time
  • Avoid edge-mounted connectors that require hand soldering

3. Panelization

Panelizing multiple PCBs into one panel reduces handling time.

  • Use V-score for rectangular boards (cheaper)
  • Use tab-routing for irregular shapes
  • Typical panel size: 200×300mm for Chinese CMs

4. Component Sourcing Strategy

Full turnkey (CM sources everything): Most expensive but least work for you.

Consigned (you provide all parts): Cheapest but you handle logistics and inventory.

Partial turnkey (CM sources passives, you provide ICs): Best balance.

5. Chinese CM Negotiation

  • Minimum order quantity: Negotiate down. Many CMs advertise 5pcs MOQ but prefer 50+
  • Get quotes from 3+ CMs per batch
  • For volume >1000 units, negotiate payment terms (30/70 T/T is standard)
  • Request DRC/DFM reports — free with most CMs, catches issues before production

6. Testing Strategy

  • Visual inspection only: Cheapest, lowest confidence
  • AOI (Automated Optical Inspection): Good for SMT solder quality
  • ICT (In-Circuit Test): Higher setup cost, fast per-board testing
  • Functional test: Best confidence, highest per-board cost

For most commercial products, AOI + sample functional testing is the sweet spot. We usually recommend that combo.
