A Quiet Workhorse in Passive Components
KOA Speer Electronics, Inc. doesn't shout about itself the way some competitors do. Spend any real time in the thick-film and wirewound resistor world, though, and the brand turns up everywhere — automotive, industrial, and telecom designs all lean on it. The product line spans general-purpose chip resistors (< $0.01 in volume) all the way to precision current-sense and high-power wirewound parts. Here's what the key series look like when you actually meet them on a BOM, and why each one earns its place.
RK73 Series — The General-Purpose Backbone
The RK73B (standard tolerance, ±2% / ±5%) and RK73H (tight tolerance, ±0.5% / ±1%) are KOA's mass-market thick film chip resistors. Available from 0402 to 2512 case sizes, power ratings from 0.063 W to 1.0 W, and resistance values from 1 Ω to 10 MΩ.
Applications: Pull-up/pull-down, current limiting, voltage divider networks in consumer and industrial electronics. Wherever a standard chip resistor is called for on the schematic, the RK73 series is a reliable drop-in with consistent TCR of ±100 to ±200 ppm/°C depending on tolerance grade.
Why choose it: Broad availability, aggressive pricing at volume, and compatibility with common solder profiles. The series is AEC-Q200 qualified for automotive use — an important detail many equivalent-brand parts can't claim. When a design simply calls for "a 10k chip resistor," this is the default we reach for.
SG73 Series — Surge Current reliable
The SG73 series is structurally identical to the RK73 but with a thicker trim resistor element and optimized electrode design to handle higher surge and pulse energy.
A standard RK73B2A (1206, 0.25 W) is rated for a maximum pulse voltage of approximately 200 V for 1 ms. The SG73P2A in the same package can handle roughly double that energy without resistance shift.
Applications: Inrush-limiting circuits, discharge paths, power supply input stages, automotive load-dump protection. Anywhere a standard chip resistor is failing under repetitive pulse conditions, the SG73 is a zero-layout-change upgrade. We've seen resistance drift under repetitive pulsing kill a board; the SG73 swap on the same footprint is what held.
WK73 Series — Wide Terminal for Higher Power
The WK73 series trades the standard terminal for a wider electrode, which grows the effective solder contact area and spreads heat better. A WK73R2H (2010 shape, 0.75 W) can handle approximately 2× the power of a standard 2010 RK73 — useful when board space is tight but you need more dissipation.
Applications: LED current sensing, power supply feedback dividers, series resistors in motor drive circuits. The wide terminal also improves mechanical strength — less prone to solder joint cracking under thermal cycling.
PWR Series — Wirewound Power Resistors
KOA's PWR series is the axial wirewound workhorse, covering 3 W to 50 W in standard (PWR-10, PWR-20) and chassis-mount (PWR-30, PWR-50) packages.
Key specs:
- Resistance range: 0.01 Ω to 100 kΩ
- Tolerance: ±1%, ±5%, ±10%
- TCR: as low as ±20 ppm/°C (low-ohm variants)
- Surge capability: 10× to 100× rated power for short pulses
Applications: Braking resistors, pre-charge circuits, current shunt sensing in power supplies and motor drives. The PWR series sees heavy use in renewable energy inverters and EV charging infrastructure for both inrush limiting and dynamic braking.
CC Series — Chip Current Sense Resistors
The CC low-ohm chip current sense series (CC, CC-L, CC2) covers resistance values from 1 mΩ to 1 Ω with TCRs as tight as ±50 ppm/°C.
For low-side current sensing in DC-DC converter feedback loops, the CC1/2 (0805, 0.5 W, 10 mΩ) is a common choice. The metal foil construction gives it better stability under high current than standard thick-film low-ohm parts.
Applications: Battery management systems (current monitoring), DC-DC converter output current sensing, motor phase current measurement, overcurrent detection circuits.
