How to Source Capacitors in 2026: Lead Times, Pricing & Trusted Suppliers
Capacitor sourcing has been on a roller coaster since the MLCC shortage of 2018-2020. Supply has largely normalized since, but the 2026 market still has hotspots that can catch procurement teams off guard. We have watched more than one BOM slip on a single high-cap line, so here is what we watch: lead times, pricing, and supplier strategy per family.
MLCC: Stable but Watch the High-Cap Segment
Multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are the highest-volume passive in electronics, and the supply base has expanded significantly since the shortage era. Murata, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, TDK, and Yageo have all added capacity — notably Murata's new Thailand plant and Samsung's expanded Tianjin lines.
Standard X7R and X5R MLCCs in 0402 through 0805 packages now ship within 2-4 weeks from authorized distribution, and pricing is down 10-15% year-over-year on commodity values (0.1µF to 10µF). These we buy on price without much worry.
The tight spot remains high-capacitance MLCCs: 47µF and above in small packages (0805, 1206), especially X7R or X7S dielectric with 25V+ ratings. These need thicker ceramic layers and more precise manufacturing, which keeps lead times at 12-16 weeks. For designs using high-cap MLCCs, qualify a second source early — TDK's CGA series and Murata's GRM series are the most common cross-reference targets. We learned that the hard way.
Tantalum: Still the Lead-Time Problem Child
Tantalum capacitors still carry the longest, least predictable lead times in the capacitor world. The ore supply chain is concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, with processing largely in China — a mix that keeps creating both geopolitical and logistical bottlenecks.
MnO2 tantalum capacitors (KEMET T491, AVX TAJ) are running 16-26 weeks in 2026. Polymer tantalum (KEMET T520, Panasonic POSCAP) is slightly better at 10-14 weeks, thanks to newer manufacturing capacity. If your design can tolerate the higher ESR and larger size, aluminum polymer is a workable alternative — Panasonic OS-CON and Nichicon FP-CAP typically land at 6-8 weeks. A customer recently asked us about that exact swap; it works, if the board has room.
Aluminum Electrolytic: The Quiet Workhorse
Through-hole aluminum electrolytic capacitors (snap-in and radial lead) are still the go-to for bulk DC-link filtering in power supplies, motor drives, and audio amplifiers. Standard series from Nichicon, Rubycon, and United Chemi-Con run a manageable 6-10 weeks. When we order these, we treat that lead time as dependable.
One trend worth watching: surface-mount aluminum electrolytics are being phased out by some manufacturers in favor of conductive polymer types. If your BOM calls for a specific SMD aluminum electrolytic, verify the manufacturer's product lifecycle status — several Panasonic and Nichicon SMD series went EOL in 2024-2025.
Sourcing Strategy Tips
- Qualify at least two capacitor suppliers for every value in your BOM. This is not just best practice — for automotive (IATF 16949) and medical (ISO 13485) supply chains, it is effectively required.
- Watch the minimum order quantity (MOQ) on specialty capacitors. High-voltage MLCCs (1kV+), low-ESR polymer, and military-grade tantalum often carry MOQs of 1,000-5,000 pieces, which can be painful for low-volume industrial and instrumentation products.
- Consider authorized distribution stock as a lead time hedge. DigiKey and Mouser carry deep inventory on popular MLCC and aluminum electrolytic values. Even if the price is slightly higher than direct, having guaranteed 2-day availability for production ramp-up is often worth the premium.
- Do not substitute capacitor dielectrics without engineering review. Replacing an X7R MLCC with an X5R may save a few cents, but X5R loses capacitance more rapidly at temperature extremes. Similarly, replacing a tantalum with an aluminum polymer changes the ESR and ripple current capability.
