FFC/FPC Connectors in 2026: Pitch, Actuator, and Sourcing Decisions
Flat Flexible Cable (FFC) and Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) connectors hide inside every laptop hinge, camera gimbal, automotive dashboard, and medical handheld. They carry display signals, touch data, camera MIPI lanes, and battery power through tight bends and moving joints — in less board real estate than a single micro-USB port. Pitches span 0.25mm to 2.54mm, and the actuator style you pick decides assembly yield. Get either wrong and the production headaches are expensive to undo.
Pitch Selection: Match the Signal, Not the Budget
0.5mm pitch — The default for display interfaces and general signal interconnect, and you'll find it in virtually every tablet and monitor. Handles up to 50V and 0.5A per contact; cables are abundant from Sumitomo and Molex.
0.3mm and 0.25mm pitch — For ultra-compact designs: smartphones, VR headsets, wearables. At 0.25mm, PCB land pattern tolerances tighten to ±0.03mm — spec these only when your fabricator holds Class C or better registration.
1.0mm and 1.25mm pitch — Battery connections, motor drivers, power distribution: anything pulling higher current. Capacity reaches 1A per contact, and the better alignment tolerance is why these are the preferred choice for industrial and automotive. If we've got the board space, this is what we default to.
Actuator Type: Assembly Speed vs. Reliability
Front-flip (ZIF) — The actuator opens toward the cable. Most common style, works well with edge-mounted connectors, but you need overhead clearance for the swing.
Back-flip (LIF) — Opens away from the cable. Better for tight board-to-board spacing, though assembly is a bit harder since cable alignment isn't visible during insertion.
Slide-lock — No rotating actuator, so assembly is fastest — but retention is lowest. We only use these with strain-relieved cables.
Contact Plating: Gold vs. Tin
Gold-on-gold (0.2µm minimum) is the requirement for high-reliability applications — medical, automotive safety, aerospace — holding contact resistance below 30mΩ long-term. Tin-on-tin is fine for consumer electronics. We've seen what galvanic corrosion does to tin-on-gold pairs, and it's not a mating combo we order into our builds.
