Package Type Trade-offs
SMT (Surface Mount)
- Pros: Automated pick-and-place, no wave solder step, cheaper per unit at volume
- Cons: Weaker PCB adhesion under mechanical stress; needs a reflow profile that survives the connector's high-temperature plastic (typically 260°C peak for LCP housings)
- When to choose: High-volume consumer, where the connector is mechanically protected by a chassis or bezel
THT (Through-Hole)
- Pros: Superior mechanical retention — 2–3× the pull-force of equivalent SMT parts
- Cons: Requires an extra wave-soldering or selective-solder process; adds roughly $0.008–0.015 per pin to board cost
- When to choose: I/O ports that face the user (USB, HDMI, RJ45), automotive ECUs, any design subject to > 5 g vibration — when in doubt, THT
Press-Fit
- Pros: No solder — the compliant pin cold-welds to the plated through-hole; reworkable and lead-free without RoHS concerns
- Cons: Requires a thicker PCB (≥ 1.6 mm), tight hole tolerance (±0.05 mm), higher up-front tooling cost
- When to choose: Automotive control units, high-reliability industrial (IEC 60664), designs with mixed-signal layers that can't tolerate reflow thermal shock

Practical Selection Flowchart
- Signal type first: differential high-speed (> 1 Gbps) → USB-C or HDMI. Single-ended or < 100 MHz → any family works; go by pitch/budget.
- Mating cycles: under 100 → FFC/FPC is fine. Over 5,000 → USB-C or reinforced BTB. Over 50,000 → only USB-C with stainless-steel shell.
- Environment: consumer (0–70°C) → standard SMT. Industrial/automotive → THT or press-fit, rated -40 to +105°C.
