What Actually Matters When Specifying Connectors and Interconnects
In 2026 you can order a Molex connector today and wait 14–22 weeks for general-purpose terminals, 26–34 weeks for high-speed parts, and 20–52+ weeks if you need custom tooling. Molex raised prices 5–30% effective July 1, 2026, with the steepest increases on high-current copper lines, as AI data center demand runs 60–80% ahead of last year. Procurement's message is blunt: you do not get a second chance to pick the right connector, so pick it right the first time.
We review connector selections daily at partscubeglobal.com, and here is what we check before the voltage rating.
Current Per Contact: Read It the Way the Lab Tests It
Datasheet current ratings come from temperature-rise testing — the classic criterion is 30 °C rise at rated current in free air. "8.5 A per circuit" on Molex Micro-Fit 3.0 means one contact, maximum wire gauge, at room temperature, alone. Put six circuits in a closed enclosure at 85 °C ambient and you are looking at a very different number. Budget 70–80% of the datasheet rating for multi-way connectors in warm boxes.
We've seen 22 AWG Micro-Fit contacts run at 5 A inside a 150 W supply. The connector measured 30 °C above ambient in the lab — the terminal was the hottest point on the board. Derating is not optional; it is the difference between a connector that lasts ten years and one that degrades in eighteen months.
Plating Decides the Lifetime, Not the Price
Tin is cheap and perfectly adequate for a handful of mating cycles. Gold flash (0.76 µm) buys roughly 50 cycles; 1.27 µm of gold gets you into the hundreds. The failure nobody sees coming is fretting corrosion: vibration on tin-plated contacts oxidizes the surface, resistance climbs, and years later the product dies intermittently. Specify tin for fixed battery harnesses in benign environments, and gold for anything that gets plugged repeatedly — test points, programming ports, field-swappable modules.
Crimp Tooling and TPA: The Unlisted Parts
A hand-crimped terminal with the wrong crimp height can double contact resistance, and $250 of operator error survives every inspection you will ever do. Budget for the manufacturer's crimp tooling, and buy the terminal-position-assurance (TPA) versions of the housing. On automotive-class harnesses, go further: a sealed system like the Molex MX150L — 5.84 mm pitch, 18 A per contact, IP67, USCAR-25 qualified — ships with integrated TPA and CPA, and its mating lock clicks audibly over a running engine. If your application vibrates, gets wet, or swings through temperature, buy the system that was validated for it. The 30% premium on the connector is cheaper than the field failure it prevents.
Keying, Sealing, and What Goes in the BOM
Spec in this order — and do not reorder it to chase a shorter lead time. Mechanical fit and keying first, because you cannot plug the wrong mate into the wrong port. Current per contact with derating second. Plating and mating cycles third. Environmental rating fourth, and only where genuinely needed, because sealed housings cost more and take longer to source. Availability last, but check it before you fall in love with a part number.
Sourcing Connectors in a Constrained Market
Off-the-shelf commodity connectors are back to 6–12 weeks. Anything exotic — custom keying, odd plating, new tooling — starts at 20 weeks and climbs fast. Dual-sourcing a second vendor is the cheapest insurance you can buy this year.
Search Molex, JST, and TE parts and check live availability before your design review. On partscubeglobal.com, the lead time conversation starts the day you spec the connector, not the day you order it.
