Ceramic Capacitors (MLCC)
Best for: Decoupling, bypassing, timing circuits, RF
The DC Bias Problem:
A 10µF 6.3V 0402 MLCC might only provide 2-3µF at 5V DC bias. Always check the manufacturer's DC bias curve. Rule of thumb: Use 2× the required capacitance for MLCCs in decoupling applications.
We've had boards come back from the lab oscillating at a few MHz because of this exact mistake.
MLCC Shortage Alternatives:
The MLCC shortage (2017-2020) drove prices up 10×. Chinese MLCC brands have since matured:
- Yageo (Taiwan) — largest global producer
- Fenghua (China) — competitive pricing on standard values
- Samsung Electro-Mechanics — high-reliability options
- Walsin (Taiwan) — good mid-range option
Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Best for: Bulk energy storage, power supply filtering, audio coupling
The Temperature Problem:
Electrolytic capacitor life halves for every 10°C temperature increase. A 105°C rated cap lasts ~2,000 hours at 105°C, but ~64,000 hours at 65°C.
Popular Chinese Brands:
- Samyoung, CapXon, Aishi — good alternatives to Nichicon/Rubycon for non-critical applications

Tantalum Capacitors
The Failure Mode Problem:
Tantalums fail short-circuit and can catch fire. Never use them on a power rail without current limiting. Polymer tantalums (POSCAP) are safer.
Use tantalum when:
- You need stable capacitance over voltage and temperature
- Space is extremely limited
- Circuit can tolerate short-circuit failure (with fuse)
Film Capacitors
Best for: Audio signal path, high-voltage applications, snubber circuits, timing circuits requiring stability
Film capacitors have the longest lifespan and best stability. For audio coupling and precision timing, they are irreplaceable.
Quick Selection Decision Tree
- Need >100µF? → Aluminum electrolytic
- Need stability over voltage? → Tantalum or film
- Need smallest size? → MLCC (check DC bias!)
- Need reliability? → Film > MLCC > Electrolytic > Tantalum
- Audio signal path? → Film
- Power decoupling? → MLCC (use 2× required value)
